Long Beach police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead in a vehicle in Central Long Beach early this morning, officials said.

Officers were called to the area of 17th Street and Gaviota Avenue at about 12:30 a.m., when they found a man sitting inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, Lt. James Richardson said.

Officers tried to save the man, but by the time paramedics got there, they determined he was dead, he said.

The victim was later identified as 22-year-old Austin Thai from Gardena.

The suspect, a male, was last seen running from the location and detectives do not yet know the motive for the shooting, Richardson said.
