UPDATED TUESDAY 9:11AM | The identity of the man fatally shot by police on Sunday night has not been released, but detectives have identified the suspect as a local Long Beach gang member with an extensive arrest record.

Detectives also determined that while at the gas station prior to the officer-involved shooting, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the driver of a dark colored vehicle in an incident they believe to be possibly gang-related. The victim who fled the scene was later located, however, the driver could not provide a motive for the attack and did not know the suspect.

“He was not injured, however his vehicle was struck multiple times by the suspect’s gunfire,” LBPD said in a release.

ORIGINAL MONDAY 9:03AM | A man died Sunday night after being shot by Long Beach police officers during a confrontation on busy Anaheim St. near the Magnolia Ave. intersection.

Police originally received reports around 6PM that a man was firing his weapon at a car at the nearby Shell gas station. The car sped away before police got there, but arriving officers discovered someone matching the man’s description walking down Anaheim St. towards Chestnut Ave.

“Officers arriving on scene saw a suspect matching the description of the man shooting at the vehicle and when they confronted him, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Eaton said. It is unclear if the suspect fired first at officers.

Officers tried to perform medical aid on the unnamed man, who was “possibly in his 30s,” but he was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Eaton said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Long Beach homicide detectives were investigating the shooting and are hoping to hear from the people who were inside of the car upon which the suspect was originally firing.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in more than a month. During the last week of September, LBPD came under scrutiny for firing upon three different suspects in three separate and unrelated incidents, killing two of them.

“Some people have asked, ‘How come there were three shootings in one week?’ But that’s not something we control. It’s something circumstances control and the suspects on the street control,” McDonnell told the Post in October.
