A Long Beach man was sentenced on Thursday to 39 years, eight months to life in prison after being convicted last week of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a 54-year-old man in 2012, leaving him with severe burns on his body, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Jacob Timothy Lagarde, 30, was found guilty of six felony counts on Wednesday, July 1, including two counts of arson of property and one count each of attempted murder, explosion with intent to murder, explosion causing mayhem or great bodily injury and arson of structure, officials stated.

Lagarde was caught on surveillance video stealing a bottle of beer from a Long Beach liquor store and then filling it with gasoline on October 19, 2012, according to Deputy District Attorney Rachel Hardiman, who prosecuted the case.

He then made a Molotov cocktail with the bottle and threw it at the victim, who was sitting outside a Long Beach market.

The resulting fire caused severe burns to the victim and damage to the outside of the building and other property, the prosecutor said.

Long Beach police released a video of the assault, which led to Lagarde’s arrest four days after the attack.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach police and fire departments.
