Police are investigating after a man was shot last night just outside the Shoreline Marina near Downtown Long Beach.

The shooting, which happened around 11 p.m., left the victim seriously hurt, police said. Officers found him with a gunshot wound to the lower body in the 500 block of Shoreline Drive, LBPD spokesman spokesman Brandon Fahey said.

A resident who lives in the nearby International Tower building said he heard five gunshots and then saw several people run across the Convention Center parking lot before officers arrived and found the victim along the bike path next to the marina.

Because of the severity of his wounds, the victim wasn’t able to give police details about what happened, Fahey said. Medics rushed him to the hospital, according to police.

The International Tower resident, who asked not to be named, said police scoured the area, but the people he saw running away were able to escape. He said most of them were wearing black clothing, and they looked young.

Police said they don’t know who is responsible and they’re still trying to determine an exact motive, but they believe the incident is gang-related.

“Gang-related” in LBPD terms doesn’t necessarily mean the people involved were gang members. The department defines it as any crime committed “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with any criminal street gang.”

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators at 562-570-7370. Anonymous tips can be sent through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or visiting lacrimestoppers.org.
