A 20-year-old man is expected to recover after he was shot in the upper body early Thursday morning near Anaheim Street and the 710 Freeway.

Police were called to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Canal Avenue at about 2:15 a.m. about an assault with a deadly weapon, Sgt. Alvino Herrera said. They found blood spatters blocks away in the 1300 block of West 15th Street but couldn’t find a victim until they learned he was already at a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his upper body.

The man told police he heard a loud pop and saw that he had been hit, Herrera said. It’s unclear what he was doing when he was shot, but afterward he went to a family member’s home and they took him to a local hospital, Herrera said.

He was not able to give officers any information about a suspect and police do not yet know what the motive for the shooting was, according to Herrera.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the LBPD Gang Detail at 562-570-7370.
