Long Beach police are investigating a shooting after a man said he was wounded while trying to take a gun away from another man early Wednesday morning.

Officers were dispatched just after 3 a.m. to Fire Station 7 in the 2200 block of Elm Avenue after the man arrived suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The man told officers that he was walking in the area of Spring Street and Pacific Avenue near Veterans Park when another man approached him and pulled out a firearm, authorities said.

“The victim attempted to grab the firearm from the suspect, at which point the suspect shot the victim and then ran away,” the LBPD said. “A good Samaritan transported the victim to the fire station.”

At the fire station, emergency personnel took the man to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers responded to the area where the wounded man said he had been shot, but they were unable to locate a crime scene, authorities said.

At this time, no suspect information is available and the motive for the shooting is unknown, according to police.
