Long Beach police are investigating a shooting that left a man wounded in the Hellman neighborhood early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call about shots fired at around 2 a.m. on the 800 block of Cerritos Avenue near Hellman Street where they found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

Paramedics transported him to a local hospital in stable condition. His injury was non-life threatening, according to De Prez.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking outside when the shooting occurred,” she said. The suspect is male.

Police do not know yet what the motive for the shooting was, but gang detectives are investigating.
