A man was stabbed in North Long Beach Sunday afternoon after confronting another man whom he fought with the day before, according to authorities.

Officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at about 12:15 p.m. in front of a liquor store at the corner of Cherry Avenue and E. Poppy Street, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria.

At the scene, police encountered the victim with stab wounds, she said. Long Beach paramedics transported him to a local hospital with cuts to his upper body, but he was expected to survive.

“Through their investigation, officers discovered the altercation stemmed from a battery between the victim and suspect from the previous day,” Chavarria said.

On Sunday, when the suspect approached the liquor store, the victim confronted him and “an altercation ensued,” she said.

Another man intervened but was not injured, police said.

Derrick Clyde Johnson, 35, of Long Beach was immediately arrested and taken into custody without incident, according to authorities. He was being held at Long Beach Jail on $30,000 bail.
