A 28-year-old Phoenix man was sentenced Monday to 26 years in federal prison for robbing stores in California and Arizona at gunpoint during a 2022 crime spree that culminated in a violent high-speed chase that ended when he accidentally shot himself, according to federal authorities.

Samuel Sven Smith pleaded guilty in May to two counts of interference with commerce by robbery and two counts of brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

“Smith showed complete disregard for the safety of others when he went on his crime spree, threatening store employees with firearms and then opening fire on federal agents,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said in a statement. “We cannot accept such blatant violence on our streets and my office is committed to doing all it can to protect the people of our district.”

Federal authorities say Smith used a gun to rob a Big Lots store in Riverside and PetSmart stores in Signal Hill, Orange, Fontana, Redlands, Pico Rivera, Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino and Phoenix between July 31, 2022 and Aug. 20, 2022.

During what would be Smith’s last robbery, according to federal authorities, he stole $400 from a store employee at a Rancho Cucamonga PetSmart. When he walked out of the store, law enforcement was waiting for him outside, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Smith fired at the officers and sped off in his vehicle, federal authorities said. He then led authorities on a high-speed chase where he fired multiple times at the officers pursuing him, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

The chase ended when officers rammed into Smith’s vehicle, federal authorities said. The impact of the crash, Smith told officers, caused him to accidentally shoot himself in the chin, according to federal authorities.

In addition to prison time, Smith was also ordered by a federal judge to pay $8,873 in restitution, according to federal authorities.
