A man crossing the street in a wheelchair was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Long Beach today, police said.
The man was killed around 12:35 a.m. Friday when a white BMW sedan traveling southbound on the Pacific Coast Highway struck him in a crosswalk at Seventh Street, the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.
“The BMW came to a stop, then drove away from the scene without rendering aid to the victim,” the statement said.
Officers quickly found the vehicle and driver at the intersection of East Second Street and Pacific Coast Highway, the LBPD said.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, police said. They identified him as 23-year-old Ethan Chung of Irvine.
“At this time, speed, distracted driving, or impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation,” police said.
Responding police officers performed CPR on the victim until personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and took over, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been publicly disclosed.
