Man wounded at Drake Park in early morning shooting, police say

A man was hit by errant gunfire at Drake Park in the Willmore neighborhood early Thursday morning, according to Long Beach police.

Officers responded to the park just after 4 a.m. and found the man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to LBPD spokesman Richard Mejia. The man said he was sitting on a park bench when he heard yelling nearby followed by gunfire, Mejia said.

The man refused to be transported to a hospital, so he was released at the scene after being treated by Long Beach firefighters, Mejia said.

The suspect fled before officers arrived. Police are investigating the incident but have no suspect information or known motive, Mejia said.
