Police say they’re trying to determine whether there’s a connection between gunfire in Central Long Beach Sunday evening and a man who said he was wounded by a bullet about three blocks away.

Police said they were told of the gunshots on Locust Avenue near 21st Street around 6:40 p.m. There, they found bullet casings but couldn’t find the shooter or any victims, LBPD spokeswoman Allison Gallagher said.

Hours later, at around 1:50 a.m., police were told a man with a gunshot wound had arrived at a local hospital. He said he’d been near 20th Street and Long Beach Boulevard when he was hit in the lower body by a bullet, according to Gallagher.

Police said they so far don’t have any details on what prompted the shooting or information on a possible suspect.

The initial report of the shooting came in around the time the Lakers were winning this year’s NBA championship, but, Gallagher said, “We have no indication it was celebratory gunfire at this time.”
