A man was wounded in a shooting that broke out during an altercation Monday night in West Long Beach, authorities said.

The shooting was reported just before midnight, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police say a man was walking in the area of Spring Street and Delta Avenue when a vehicle with an unknown number of people inside approached him. A brief altercation between the man and the suspects followed, which escalated into the shooting, police said.

Authorities were then called to the 1300 block of West Willow Street, about a half-mile south of Spring Street and Delta Avenue, where they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel rendered aid to the man and took him to a local hospital for further treatment, police said, adding that he is expected to survive.

At the scene of the shooting, officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate a crime scene, evidence or suspects, according to the department. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
