A man was left wounded and the suspected gunman was arrested after a shooting Thursday night in Downtown Long Beach, according to police.

The gunfire broke out after two groups got into an altercation on Elm Avenue near Sixth Street around 10:20 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department said on its website.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was with a group of male subjects, when they got into a physical altercation with [a] second group of male subjects,” police said. “During the altercation, a male adult suspect from the second group discharged a firearm towards the first group and struck the victim.”

Police arrived and arrested the suspected shooter, who they said was a 19-year-old Long Beach resident. He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the LBPD.

The wounded man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, according to police, who said they’re still investigating.

They did not elaborate on what prompted the altercation.
