A woman was wounded this weekend when a gunman who tried to take her purse chased her down and shot her, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said the woman was walking in a parking lot on Bellflower Boulevard near Stearns Street at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when a vehicle stopped in front of her. A man got out, pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her purse, according to the LBPD.

The woman fled, but the gunman caught her and a struggle broke out between the two, police said.

That’s when the gunman shot the woman in the lower body, took her purse and drove off, according to the LBPD.

Medics took the woman to a local hospital to be treated for wounds that weren’t life-threatening, police said.

The shooting is under investigation, according to police, who said they are still gathering suspect information.
