Police say a gunman fled up the 710 Freeway after wounding three people in downtown Long Beach, leading officers on a wild chase that ended with gunfire and a crash.
The shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. on Aquarium Way in the city’s downtown waterfront, according to police. Three people were hurt, including two who needed to be hospitalized, they said.
Police soon spotted the suspected shooter about three miles away near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue, but he drove off, and officers gave chase, according to the LBPD.
He fired at police while they pursued him along the 710 Freeway, and at least one officer shot back, the department said in a statement. Nobody was hit by the gunfire, and the fleeing driver eventually crashed into a pole in downtown Los Angeles, police said. He was hurt in the crash and hospitalized as a result, they added.
Police were still investigating Tuesday morning and, for a while, had all lanes of the northbound 710 shut down at Willow Street. The connectors from the 405 and 91 freeways were also closed for a time.
