A Long Beach man was arrested late Monday after police say he took his one-year-old son and fled to Tijuana after stabbing the baby’s mother’s new boyfriend earlier that morning.
Giovanny Santiago-Enriquez was located in Tijuana on Monday night at about 8:15PM by the U.S. Marshals Service with his one-year-old son Jayden Nathaniel Santiago, who had been the subject of a statewide Amber Alert, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Santiago-Enriquez, 37, is in custody after the U.S. Marshals made the arrest in Tijuana, police said.
Jayden remained in Tijuana on Tuesday morning, pending the completion of paperwork relating to his custody, said LAPD Officer Lilliana Preciado. This was because Santiago-Enriquez had primary custody of the child, Preciado said.
U.S. Marshals Inspector Al Rios, however, said the U.S. Marshals believed Santiago-Enriquez might have had joint custody with the child’s mother. Rios continued to say the Amber Alert was issued because of the risks associated with the altercation that happened Monday morning and Santiago-Enriquez’s history of suicide attempts.
Rios commended the Policía Estatal Preventiva for its work in helping the U.S. Marshals locate Santiago-Enriquez.
“Special thanks to the Baja, California state police fugitive unit for the assistance,” he said.
The Amber Alert for Jayden was issued Monday afternoon after Santiago-Enriquez entered his former girlfriend’s home on the 500 block of West 15th Street in San Pedro earlier that morning at around 1:30AM, went through an unlocked front door, went into her bedroom and stabbed her new boyfriend several times, police said. The victim sustained serious wounds.
During the altercation, Jayden was apparently left in the car parked a block away, police said.
The former girlfriend suffered minor injuries while trying to prevent Santiago-Enriquez from stabbing her boyfriend. Santiago-Enriquez then fled, throwing the knife he had used on the boyfriend out of his car. He then went to his home in Long Beach before fleeing with his son to Tijuana, police said.
