Police say they arrested a 28-year-old Long Beach man on suspicion of killing a man last month in a gang-related shooting.
Detectives arrested Edgar Melgar Salazar Thursday morning at his apartment on Chestnut Avenue near West Cowles Street, according to Long Beach police.
Melgar Salazar was booked into jail on suspicion of fatally shooting Durell Shell, 38, of Long Beach, on Feb. 18 on Locust Avenue near East 14th Street, roughly a half-mile away from Melgar Salazar’s home.
Detectives do not believe the two men knew each other, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, police said.
Shortly before 9:05 p.m. on Feb. 18, officers responded to reports of a shooting on Locust Avenue near 14th Street, police said.
When officers arrived, they found evidence of a crime scene and were notified that a man wounded by the gunfire had been taken by car to a local hospital.
The victim, later identified as Shell, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Melgar Salazar was being held on $3 million bail, according to jail records, and was also suspected of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.
