On 09/20/16 at 11:36AM | A sheriff’s deputy pursuit led by a burglary suspect in Compton Tuesday morning ended with a crash that killed the suspect, officials said.
According to authorities, the suspect, described only as a man, led sheriff’s deputies on a chase from the Compton Station to Long Beach Boulevard and Victoria Street, just west of the 710 Freeway and was wanted in connection with a burglary.
The deputies reportedly tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver drove off. Once the vehicle reached Long Beach, around 6:00AM, it hit an SUV and a patrol car before shearing off a hydrant. The suspect was thrown from the vehicle.
The suspect was declared deceased at the scene.
A crowd gathered at the scene of the crash, and two people believed to be distraught family members of the suspect—Antowan Parker, 27, of Bellflower and another unnamed person—were detained by police officers. Parker was booked on suspicion of resisting/obstructing a police officer and the second was arrested on the same charges, later released due to a “pre-existing medical condition” pending further investigation, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Brad Johnson.
No deputies were injured and no shots were fired. The suspect was the lone occupant of the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department.
The Long Beach Boulevard offramp from the southbound 710 Freeway was closed during the investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.
This report was updated at 3:22PM with information related to the crash and subsequent arrests.
