Long Beach police swept through an apartment building but did not find the suspect they were looking for after an hours-long standoff near 17th Street and Linden Avenue.
That intersection is about a block away from Poly High School and from Roosevelt Elementary School. Both schools were temporarily placed on precautionary lockdowns but have since returned to normal operations, a Long Beach Unified School District spokesperson said in an email.
Police said the situation started around 10:20 a.m. when they got a call asking officers to help move along an “unwelcome” person from a property in the area.
The person went into a nearby home and refused to come out, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Alyssa Baeza.
“Officers established a perimeter and attempted to de-escalate; however, the suspect refused to cooperate,” she said in an email. It’s not clear whether the person was armed.

SWAT officers soon arrived at the scene. For hours, the area was taped off as heavily armored officers and armored vehicles took up positions.
Eventually, officers searched the building in question but did not find the suspect, according to the LBPD.
Officers began leaving the area around 3:30 p.m.
