A man and a woman were injured when an attacker with what turned out to be a BB gun robbed them Sunday night in the Los Cerritos area of Long Beach, according to police.

The two victims were getting out of their car on Country Club Drive near Stewart Way around 11:40 p.m. on Jan. 19 when the gunman approached and took a wallet and a phone from them, Long Beach Police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

Both victims were hurt during the robbery, according to De Prez. The 74-year-old man was treated at the scene by medics, but the 69-year-old woman had to be taken to a local hospital, she said.

“The victims sustained their injuries as a result of a physical altercation that occurred during the robbery,” De Prez said. “Detectives believe that the BB gun was used in the altercation but it was not discharged.”

Police are still looking for the suspect, who took off before officers arrived, but investigators were able to determine the weapon he used was a BB gun, De Prez said.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated. Long Beach police originally said both victims were in their early 70s, but later said they were 74 and 69.
