A serial abuser was sentenced to three years in county jail on Friday for beating his pregnant girlfriend multiple times, the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Long Beach resident Daniel Acosta, 25, was found guilty by a jury on Thursday, June 25, of three misdemeanor counts of domestic violence resulting in traumatic condition for three separate beatings against his former girlfriend, officials said. The woman was pregnant with Acosta’s child on a majority of those incidents.

On Friday, June 26, Acosta was sentenced to the maximum term of three years in county jail after the jury trial. This is his third domestic battery conviction in four years, according to officials.

Acosta was also convicted of domestic battery against a different woman he was dating. The victim in the prior case also has two children with Acosta, officials said.

“When a person repeatedly causes violence to those around him, especially a pregnant wife or girlfriend, there is every reason to believe the violence will continue and escalate unless something is done,” City Prosecutor Doug Haubert said in a statement.

Long Beach Superior Court Judge Daniel Lowenthal ordered an additional 270 days in jail because Acosta was on probation for a prior domestic abuse conviction. It was the maximum remaining time for the probation violation, resulting in 45 months in jail, officials said.

Lowenthal also issued a protective order for 10 years, prohibiting Acosta from contacting or coming within 100 yards of the victim, said prosecutors.

“We’re pleased that the jury held the defendant accountable for his actions,” Long Beach Deputy City Prosecutor Pooja Kumar, who handled the jury trial and the sentencing, said.

“Given the seriousness of the conduct and the defendant’s criminal history, Judge Lowenthal imposed the appropriate sentence,” Kumar said in statement.
