Long Beach police said a man lying in the roadway on Seventh Street was killed Thursday when a car hit him around 2:38 a.m.

Police said the crash happened just outside the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center, which is on Seventh Street near the intersection with Channel Drive.

Police said a driver was headed east on Seventh when he hit the man, who died at the scene.

“The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation,” the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement. “At this time, speed, impaired driving and distracted driving do not appear to be factors in the collision.”

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the deceased man while they work to notify his family. It’s not clear why he was in the roadway.

Police asked anyone with more information about the crash to contact Detective Kevin Johansen at 562-570-7355 or submit an anonymous tip through LACrimeStoppers.org.
