Long Beach police detectives were just north of Downtown when they saw someone in a vehicle start shooting at someone on a nearby sidewalk Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Nobody was wounded by the gunfire, which rang out on Pacific Avenue near Eighth Street around 3:15 p.m., Long Beach police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.

“The victim was seen running away from the scene as detectives began to follow the suspect vehicle,” Chavarria said.

After waiting for backup, officers pulled over the vehicle on the northbound 710 Freeway onramp at Anaheim Street, police said.

Police said they took multiple people in the vehicle into custody and found a gun inside.

When officers returned to the scene of the shooting, they found two people who’d been shot at, neither of whom were hurt, Chavarria said. Police are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
