Long Beach police say they arrested a man on suspicion of shooting a gun into the air around the Bluff Heights area on Sunday night.

Police said the gunfire started around 10:20 p.m. near Third Street and Orizaba Avenue. Officers detained a man, and when they searched him, found a handgun and bullet casings, Long Beach Police Department spokesman Brandon Fahey said.

The man told officers he’d been shooting the gun “towards the sky to ensure it was operable,” Fahey said.

Nobody reported being hurt by the gunfire. Police identified the shooter as John Moenning, a 31-year-old Long Beach resident.

Fahey said Moenning was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public, carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm without a permit.

He was booked into Long Beach Jail on $35,000 bail, police said.

Police said they’re still investigating and asked anyone with more details about the incident to contact the violent crimes detail at 562-570-7250.
