A man was killed Sunday night when the stolen car in which he was a passenger flipped down a freeway embankment during a police pursuit and ejected him from the vehicle. The driver of the car, who survived the accident, is facing multiple felonies upon release from the hospital.

The incident began around 7PM when officers spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of 20th St. and Pacific Ave. and attempted to pull it over. The driver failed to stop and instead accelerated the vehicle, initiating a pursuit that traveled at a high rate of speed westbound on Pacific Coast Highway toward the Terminal Island Freeway.

When the driver attempted to turn southbound onto the freeway, the vehicle travelled over the embankment and flipped several times, ejecting both the driver and a passenger. According to police, the driver attempted to flee the scene after the collision but was apprehended by officers nearby. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe that the driver may have been under the influence of drugs.
