Police say they arrested a 24-year-old from Compton on suspicion of fatally shooting a 52-year-old man last month in North Long Beach, but a motive for the deadly encounter remains unclear.
At about 3:50 a.m. on March 17, officers responding to a report of a shooting in the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue found a man who had been shot in the upper body, according to Long Beach police.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead, police said. He was later identified as 52-year-old Alejandro Calderon, of Hawthorne.
Through their investigation, homicide detectives identified 24-year-old Malik Cooper, of Compton, as the alleged shooter, police said. They obtained a warrant for his arrest and took him into custody Monday during a traffic stop in Compton.
Cooper was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held on $2 million bail, police said.
A motive for the shooting remained under investigation. Police did not disclose the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
