UPDATE | An armed robbery suspect who was shot and critically wounded in his attempt to flee police Sunday afternoon in Long Beach is among five men and a juvenile who were booked in connection to the crime, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
Police were investigating an armed robbery involving multiple suspects near Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and Lemon Avenue at 3:21PM on Sunday, September 11, said LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.
As officers approached multiple suspects in the parking lot of the shopping center, some suspects fled on foot while others fled in a vehicle, officials stated.
At least one suspect was detained by officers who also located a firearm at the scene.
Police said the fleeing vehicle continued until it collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle across the street.
“As one suspect was fleeing the vehicle, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” officials stated. “A male adult suspect sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to a local hospital.”
A containment perimeter was then established while officers searched for a suspect who escaped. A short time later, he was apprehended a block away, officials stated. No other suspect is considered missing. The wounded suspect is listed in critical condition.
Authorities booked five men—including the injured suspect—and one male juvenile, in connection with the armed robbery. Officials said they will not release more details on the suspect or the armed robbery at this time.
The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-step process that evaluates legal, policy, tactical, and equipment issues. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.
