A suspected burglar with a felony warrant was able to escape police and a SWAT team despite a roughly two-hour search near an Alamitos Beach intersection.
Shortly before 4:10 p.m. on Monday, a 911 caller reported that a person had broken into a home near the intersection of Third Street and Alamitos Avenue, according to Long Beach police.
Officers responded to the scene and briefly spotted a man matching the description, but he ran off, police said.
Police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team to assist with the search because the suspected burglar had an outstanding felony warrant, a police spokesperson said.
The search appeared to be focused on a fenced-off construction site near the intersection. The project, designed as affordable housing for low-income seniors, was approved in 2017 and broke ground in 2024.
Police called off the search after 6 p.m., a police spokesperson said.
No further details about the warrant were immediately available.
