Police say SWAT officers have arrested an armed burglar who broke into a West Long Beach home and then barricaded himself in a nearby vacant unit Monday evening.
The man, according to police, broke into a home in the 2200 block of Santa Fe Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. and pointed a gun at the people inside.
The man didn’t fire his gun but soon went into a vacant residence where he barricaded himself inside as officers responded to the scene, police said.
The Long Beach Police Department said it activated its SWAT team and attempted to get the man to surrender, but he refused.
After multiple hours of trying to coax the man to exit, officers used tear gas on the home, police said.
When the man tried to escape, officers used less-lethal ammunition and a K9 to subdue him, police said.
The man was taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital to be medically cleared before being booked. Police did not immediately provide the man’s name.
