A woman with a weapon later determined to be a replica firearm was shot by Long Beach police mid-day Saturday after she brandished it during a two-and-a-half hour standoff with SWAT officers.

According to LBPD’s Marlene Arrona, police were dispatched at 9:47AM to 3rd St. and Long Beach Blvd. for “a person with a gun” call. A mental evaluation team (MET) was also dispatched to the location and for two-and-a-half hours, LBPD and MET negotiators called to the woman–who was near a car parked on the north side of 3rd St. between Elm Ave. and Long Beach Blvd.–in both English and Spanish.

According to the release, the SWAT team was contacted to assist with the incident and while waiting for them to arrive, the suspect began walking towards officer and removed the clothing that was covering the item in her right hand, revealing what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun.

When the woman began walking towards the officers with her weapon pointed at them just after 11:30AM, an officer-involved shooting occured, said Arrona. She was transported to the hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition. Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell told reporters at the scene that police mental health experts tried for about an hour to get the woman to surrender prior to the shooting. Witness said they heard a volley of four to six shots.

The suspect has been identified as Adeline Arroyo, a 32-year-old resident of Long Beach. She was booked for displaying a replica firearm in the presence of a police officer.

3rd St. and Elm Ave. as well as Long Beach Blvd. was closed down for most of the day for the incident and ensuing investigation. Businesses at City Place as well as the post office remained on lockdown for the entirety of the standoff. This is the second officer-involved shooting this month and according to LBPD, the 19th this year.
