This morning, the California Faculty Association (CFA) announced that their membership voted 54% in support of CSU Chancellor Charles Reed’s proposal to have faculty accept two unpaid furlough days per month for one year. 68% of the 13,007 eligible voting members of the CFA participated in the vote.

The union membership also voted 80% in favor of a vote of no-confidence in the CSU Chancellor for his “lack of leadership in protecting accessible, affordable and a high quality education for the CSU.”

The CFA represents 23,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches who teach in the California State University system.

The CSU system is facing about $584 million in funding cuts after receiving the California state budget, and this week approved a 20% tuition fee increase for students.  The CSU is exploring further options to reduce costs, and each of the 23 campuses will also be responsible for cutting their own budgets.

Reaction to the fee increases from CSULB President F. King Alexander and CSU spokesperson Claudia Keith can be found in this story.
