5:50am | Gary DeLong defeated two challengers in the City Council’s 3rd District to earn a second four-year term, winning 62.6% of the vote over 20.1% for Tom Marchese and 17.4% for Terry Jensen.
DeLong was elected in 2006 and despite a loyal base that served him well on Tuesday, his termed was marked by accusations of catering to businesses over the concerns residents and struck a nerve with environmentalists and others alike for his support of a land swap with developer Tom Dean – whom many believe is a close friend of DeLong’s – that would have traded valuable City property for Dean’s wetlands which seemed to be heavily unbalanced financially.
DeLong, the President and CEO of a local telecommunication company, is seen as one of the Council’s more conservative members.
