A 27 year-old Stanton resident died Tuesday morning after police say his convertible collided with a large cement-and-steel commercial office building sign on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Anaheim St.

The accident began around 6:32AM when Trevor Stevens’ 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse side swiped a silver Ford Edge while traveling northbound on PCH near the Recreation Park Golf Course.

According to a preliminary investigation, Long Beach Police Department detectives believe Stevens then accelerated and began to drive northbound in the southbound lanes toward oncoming traffic before veering left towards Anaheim St., jumping the sidewalk and colliding with the building sign on the intersection’s northwest corner.

Officers arriving at the scene discovered the convertible resting on top of the building sign with considerable front end damage. Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene. He had no passengers and was the only injury reported.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, but the investigation remains ongoing.
