A man was speeding in his car near Queensway Bay on Monday when he lost control of the vehicle and drove down a rock embankment into the water, police officials said.
Police were first called to the area of Pier J, which is near the Port of Long Beach and the Queen Mary, at about 2:45 p.m. about a submerged vehicle, police spokeswoman Allison Gallagher said.
The driver and his passenger escaped the car on their own and the police department dive team was able to get the car out of the water, Gallagher said.
Speeding is dangerous! Over the weekend, a driver was speeding and lost control, causing his vehicle to go into the water. We’re glad both occupants escaped safely. Great work to our dive team for recovering the submerged vehicle! 🤿🌊 #LBPDDiveTeam #GoSafelyCA pic.twitter.com/gKm65wQce9
