As part of a program funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the Long Beach Police Department will deploy a DUI saturation patrol this weekend.

On Saturday, January 19, between 8PM and 4AM, the LBPD’s DUI Enforcement Team will patrol areas specifically prone to high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests.

“California’s roadways are very much safer than they were before 2006,” said Office of Traffic Safety Director Christopher J. Murphy in a statement. “The Long Beach Police Department will be keeping the pressure on through enforcement and public awareness so that we can continue saving lives and reach the vision we all share–toward zero deaths, every one counts.”

By law, enforcement agencies must release information of such patrols to the public. Evidence suggests that such announcements deter bar patrons from getting behind the wheel by simple fear of passing through the saturation, proving much more efficient than advertising campaigns and regular patrolling.

Funding for this program is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
