A 79 year-old pedestrian died last Thursday after being hit by a truck while crossing the street against a red light in Bixby Knolls.
Police say the roadways were wet when Donald Phillips of Long Beach attempted to cross westbound on Atlantic Ave. at Burlinghall Dr. at around 10:30PM Wednesday night and was struck by a 1997 Ford pick-up truck travelling southbound on Atlantic. Phillips was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, but was pronounced dead Thursday.
The driver of the truck, a 59 year-old male resident of Long Beach, remained at the scene and was cooperative with authorities. He indicated that he had observed the victim at the last moment, but was unable to avoid the collision, possibly due to the wet weather. There are no charges pending against the driver at this time.
