An elderly woman was attacked by her dog yesterday, receiving significant injuries; an intervening firefighter also sustained injuries, the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) said.

A fire engine was finishing a call and heading back to station four at about 4:00PM when the personnel saw an elderly woman being attacked by her dog in the 3700 block of 5th Street, said LBFD spokesman Brian Fisk.

The woman was known in the neighborhood for walking her dog, a large mixed breed German Shepard, often in the neighborhood, and it was unclear why the dog was attacking her, Fisk said.

Fire personnel intervened and engaged the dog, and the woman was transported as a trauma patient to a local hospital with significant injuries.

A firefighter who tried to fight the dog off sustained multiple puncture wounds to his arms and legs, Fisk said.

The dog is currently under a 10-day home quarantine, said Animal Care Services spokesman Ted Stevens.
