You read it here first. Jason Gewirtz, Executive City Editor, is leaving the Press-Telegram. He submitted his resignation last week and is leaving the PT on May 10th. Jason has accepted a new managing editor position at Sports Travel Magazine, an LA based monthly magazine that covers the sports event industry.
Jason has been the Executive City Editor and Business Editor since July 2006 and has in that capacity managed the news and business pages. Before that position, Jason did a stint as City and Business Editor, and from 2000 through January 2006, he was the Long Beach City Hall reporter.
This is a tremendous loss for the Press-Telegram, and an even bigger loss for Long Beach. Jason in my opinion was the glue and heart of the PT. He is kind, smart, an excellent reporter and a great editor. He is a dedicated journalist who wrote and edited some of the most important Long Beach stories of the last decade.
I asked Jason how he felt about leaving the PT, here’s what he said…
“I’m going to miss my co-workers here and the chance to be involved with the day to day news coverage in and around Long Beach. I’ve had a great run at the PT and I’m going to miss it. But this is also a great opportunity that allows me to continue editing and return to writing. I’ve always been interested in the sports world, so this new position is a perfect fit for me.”
Jason will be missed by all of us who read his stories and admired his leadership at the Press-Telegram.
However, he is not completely leaving us…he and his wife are going to continue living in Long Beach and he plans to stay involved in the city.
I am fortunate to call Jason a friend and a mentor. We wish him the best of luck on his new endeavor…
Thanks again Jason !
