2:36pm | The estimated $490 million courthouse that will be built in Long Beach in the coming years took another step forward today when Long Beach Judicial Partners signed a 35-year services agreement with the Administrative Office of the Courts.

LBJP will finance, design, build, operate and maintain the new courthouse, with construction expected in early 2011 and opening scheduled for fall 2013.

The project is turning heads across the country because of the innovative “performance-based infrastructure” method being used that will combine the private sector LBJP with a private entity like the AOC.

“We are very pleased to be moving forward on the much-needed Long Beach Courthouse,” said William C. Vickrey, Administrative Director of the Courts.

“The new building is intelligently designed to serve the public and the needs of the court, and we believe it will be a landmark addition to downtown Long Beach. We’ve worked hard with the project company to structure this unique arrangement so that it will achieve long-term value for the state, and we are grateful for the strong partnerships with Governor Schwarzenegger’s administration and with the state Legislature that have enabled us to move this innovative project forward. As the building is constructed, commissioned, and occupied, the AOC will distill best practices from this process that could be applied to similar future projects, not only within the judicial branch, but also by other state entities.”

The current Long Beach Courthouse on Ocean Blvd. downtown was completed in 1959 and is described by the AOC as “undersized and dilapidated.”
