Two people, including a young child, were critically hurt when they were trapped on the second story of a burning house in Long Beach Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

The blaze began around 8:20 a.m. at the home on Atlantic Avenue near Burnett Street. A neighbor, who declined to be named, said he saw smoke and fire coming from the roof of the house.

He said that’s when he started whistling and trying to get the attention of the people inside the home who hadn’t noticed what was happening.

Once they saw the fire, several people inside evacuated, but two people—a man and a younger child—were stuck somewhere in the house, the neighbor said.

Fire crews rushed to the home and knocked the blaze down quickly but learned the two people were stuck on the second floor.

After pulling them from the building, firefighters performed CPR on the child, who’d gone into cardiac arrest, according to a spokesman for the Long Beach Fire Department.

Both the child and adult were rushed to the hospital where they were in critical condition Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

Two other adults also suffered minor injuries in the blaze and were taken to the hospital, according to the LBFD. They estimated the child was around 3 years old.

The neighbor said one person appeared to have suffered severe burns while trying to rescue someone inside the home.

“It happened so quick,” the neighbor said. “Good thing [firefighters] arrived quick.”
