Los Angeles County Fire Department and Long Beach Fire Department crews battled a blaze at a commercial building in Signal Hill this morning.

The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m., burning through the building’s roof and sending a large plume of smoke into the air. The LA County Fire Department reported that units were in defensive mode due to a roof collapse, but they were able to knock down the fire shortly before 7:30 a.m.

More than a dozen fire vehicles responded to the 1700 block of 28th Street, which is just northwest of the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Willow Street.

The LBFD reported shortly after 9 a.m. that crews prevented the fire from spreading to other businesses and that no injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation, and as of 9 a.m., 28th Street from Cherry Avenue to Walnut Avenue remained closed to traffic.
