Tuesday night was a busy one for the firefighters at Long Beach Fire Station 2 in Alamitos Beach as they extingushed two apartment fires in the span of an hour.

Two unrelated fires broke out within minutes of each other and members of the company responded to each. The first was reported at 9:13PM directly across from the fire station on the 1600 block of E. 3rd St. According to firefighter Will Nash, units arriving on-scene found fire and heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment and were told that the upstairs tenant was trapped inside.

The person escaped the apartment by breaking a window on the second floor and falling into the alley below and suffered some cuts and abrasions that are expected to be non-life threatening.

“Fire was confined to the initial apartment, and was started by food left on the stove,” said Nash.

A second apartment fire was reported only ten minutes later, at 9:23PM on the 600 block of Olive Ave., across the street from St. Anthony’s High School. Fire units arrived on-scene and found fire and heavy smoke coming from a ground level apartment, Nash said. No one was inside of the apartment at the time of the fire, but the tenant was reported as being seen in the area prior to the fire.

“The fire was extinguished and contained to the initial apartment,” said Nash. “This fire is currently under investigation by the LBFD Investigations Unit.”
