9:30am | Firefighters doused an east Long Beach apartment blaze and safely evacuated all 10 residents on Monday morning, but not before the fire caused significant damage. Firefighters are still determining the cause of the fire and the cost of the damage.

The incident took place at 4406 Greenmeadow Road near the Lakewood Country Club and the intersection of Carson and Lakewood, with a call coming to firefighters around 10:30am on Monday morning. Firefighters found the blaze well in progress on the second story apartment building and moved inside the building to aggressively attack the fire’s core. It was under control within 15 minutes.

The building posed a unique challenge because the hallway in the center of the building because heat and smoke will accumulate in emergency exits, possibly trapping anyone trying to escape. Luckily there were no injuries on Monday. Firefighters used chainsaws to open a hole in the roof of the building that allowed heat and smoke to escape safely.
