A brush fire near a freeway and homeless encampment in Long Beach yesterday resulted in the injury of a firefighter, according to the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD).

Firefighters were dispatched at 10:46AM on Sunday, July 23 to northeast of the Long Beach (710) Freeway/Artesia (91) Freeway interchange and had the fire out by 12:07PM, according to LBFD spokesman Brian Fisk.

While battling a two- to three-acre fire of grass, brush and trees near the freeway interchange, the firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital, Fisk said.

“There were no civilians on scene,” he said.

A SigAlert was issued at 11:23AM, closing the transition roads between the northbound 710 Freeway and the westbound 91 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP cleared the transition roads and canceled the SigAlert just before 3:00PM.
