Long Beach firefighters saved the life of a dog that was trapped in a burning home Monday afternoon in the Lincoln neighborhood.

A spokesperson for the Fire Department said the blaze was reported around 5:30 p.m. in a small residential complex on 10th Street between Walnut and Hofman avenues.

When firefighters arrived, “there was one unit with significant smoke and fire,” LBFD Capt. Jack Crabtree said. “We quickly extinguished the fire, and it did not spread to other units.”

He said firefighters found two cats and a dog inside the smoke-filled apartment. The cats were dead, but firefighters gave the dog oxygen and saved its life, according to Crabtree.

The animals are being taken care of, and the Red Cross is helping their owner find a place to stay, Crabtree said.

The department is investigating what caused the fire.
