In what is the city of Long Beach’s first allotment of Federal Stimulus funding, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will grant $3.8 million to the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services to fund a program to eliminate home health hazards such as lead-based paint and asthma & allergy triggers.

The City Council will decide whether or not to approve the grant on Tuesday, April 21.  The City can spend the funds as soon as the Council approves the grant.

It is the first of what Long Beach officials expect to be many funding grants from the federal government as part of the new Stimulus Bill.  In March, the Council was presented with a list of projects totaling more than $600 million that the City submitted to the federal government.  Officials to not expect to receive funding for the full amount, but submitted a large request in hopes of receiving as much as possible.

More to come…
