10:15am | I hope you’re almost finished building your flying toilet or whatever, because the deadline to apply for Flugtag in Long Beach this August is almost here!
If that sentence completely flew over your head, Flugtag – which means “Flying Day” in German – is an event held around the world by Red Bull that allows participants to launch homemade contraptions into the air as they “fly” as far as they can. Creativity is definitely a plus. The wacky event draws thousands of spectators, and for the first time ever, Flugtag will be held in Long Beach at Rainbow Harbor this summer.
You’ll remember that Red Bull has previous experience with wild events in Long Beach. On New Year’s Eve, extreme sports star Travis Pastrana launched his Red Bull Subaru off of the Pine Avenue Pier and set a new world record by jumping 274 feet over the harbor.
Long Beach participants have experience in Red Bull events, as well. Last September, three local teams from CSULB built creative and hilarious soapbox cars and raced them through the streets of Los Angeles in the Red Bull Soapbox Race. What wacky creations will people come up with for Flugtag this summer?
The deadline to submit your application is this Friday, May 7, and the actual event will be held on August 21.
