3:24pm | A familiar face in Long Beach education is headed to Sacramento, as Governor Jerry Brown named new appointments to his administrative team today.
Former Long Beach Unified School District superintendent Dr. Carl Anthony Cohn has been appointed to the state Board of Education along with six others. Brown also named appointments to the California Air Resources Board, Labor and Workforce Development Agency and the Department of Personnel Administration. All appointees are Democrats.
Dr. Cohn served as superintendent of the LBUSD from 1992-2002, where he instituted uniforms at many schools, ended social promotion and increased academic expectations that resulted in shrinking student achievement gaps. Dr. Cohn retired in 2002 but was hired to run the San Diego Unified School District in 2005, until he left that position in 2008.
