The title ‘professor’ will be redefined this month in downtown Long Beach for University by the Sea’s arts and culture festival this upcoming weekend.

Top industry leaders, local government officials, business owners, artists and CSULB academics will host a series of collegiate-style U-Sea classes on fascinating subjects—an entire semester in one day!

Prominent city leaders like Mayor Bob Foster, Second District City Councilmember Suja Lowenthal, former MOLAA executive director Gregorio Luke and Straight Talk host Art Levine will give animated lectures on everything from Roman history to American ethics.

Lowenthal, who will be teaching an environmental stewardship course on water conservation, said she looks forward to “leading an engaging discussion on the challenges confronting water conservation efforts in Southern California, and how our water shortage is really the result of our failed attempts to push our natural environment beyond its means.”

KLON DJ and rock-n-roll expert Steve Propes, who has interviewed such classics as Curtis Mayfield and Bo Diddley, will “tune people in on the real roots of rock,” with a unique, musical tutorial of rock history.

Sander Roscoe Wolff, executive director of longbeachculture.org and a talented musician and visual artists, will host an interactive, layered sound experiment by using an electronic improvisation tool and the bold creativity of ‘students’.

Also on the U-Sea faculty listing are Fifth District City Councilmember Gerri Schipske, giving a lecture on “Women During Wartime: Long Beach’s Rosie the Riveter,” and Congressional Green Party candidate Daniel Brezenoff, discussing the Burning Man festival as a “temporary city built from free expression, survival and experimentation.”

Divided into four sessions from noon until 5:30 p.m., all classes will be held in various Pine Avenue restaurants, where free food and drink specials will be offered.

Class sign-ups and more details can be found online at U-Sea’s website.

The event is Sunday October 28th.
